Elmsley

Rideau Trail kilometres 179.9-176.3 & 166.7-164.9

Frizell Road, North Elmsley township

My wrenched right ankle chose a more sedate day on the trail over snowshoe orienteering. The first adventure began at the intersection of Frizell and highway 43. I hiked alongside the highway to the empty lot beyond the third house. The trail turned south through an open marsh behind the houses on the south side of the highway. Unexpectedly, I bonked within the first kilometre. The calorie deficit was so bad that I consumed the Hammer Gel which was for emergency only. Eventually I entered an aged cedar forest. Drifted snow along the edges of open fields slowed things down.

There were four stiles in each direction but I could step over three of the old fences.

Can Dad identify the ancient farm implements?

I met the road I had snowshoed in February 2004 and at that time the Rideau Trail came from the south. Following the new flashes, I headed north up the road, west off the road, crossing a field edge which led to a ditch feeding the Tay River 600m upstream from where the Rideau Trail previously left the Tay.

Wild Life & Ferrier roads, North Burgess township

This adventure began at the Perth landfill site. I simply snowshoed along the sides of Wild Life and Ferrier roads. Where possible, I used the snowmobile track. Crossing the roads, my new snowshoes were introduced to pavement. The temperature had dropped and I wore my parka through the hike. In the earlier adventure, it was warm enough that I had abandoned my coat in the woods. In my workout Thursday, the windchill damaged the top of my right ear. I took extra care with vaseline today. Where Ferrier Road becomes a snowmobile trail, I turned back, having snowshoed that portion in February 2004. At the turn around, I saw two robins which I did not think wintered in eastern Ontario. I heard trains on the Belleville sub only at the start and finish of my adventures.

Checking out the Rideau Trail on the way home I learned that the route north of Murphy's Point is now off road.
